A new collaborative project called Majakka (majakka means a lighthouse in English) has started in August 2017. Majakka-project is managed by Pro-tukipiste ry and operates in close partnership with four other organizations: Pakolaisneuvonta ry (Refugee Advice Centre)), Monica Naiset Liitto ry (Monica- Multicultural Women’s Association), HeSeta ry (organization supporting sexual and gender minority rights and wellbeing) and Rikosuhripäivystys (Victim Support Finland).
Majakka-project is funded by The Ministry of Justice Finland (http://oikeusministerio.fi/en/frontpage) and it targets those groups of people who have difficulties in accessing legal protection and victim support services. The aim of the project is to explore various barriers faced by people during the process of finding the appropriate assistance they need. The project will advance low threshold access to legal protection and support services for victims of crime, especially for certain marginalised groups of people. We will achieve this goal by creating specialized support partnership models that will pay attention to specific vulnerability factors that are often complex and intertwined.
On a practical level Majakka-project will strive to reach those groups of people who, due to various vulnerability factors, do not seek help or tell anybody about the crimes committed against them, let alone report them to the authorities. Legal protection and assistance from victim support services does not actualise for these people. Barriers such as lack of knowledge of your basic rights, mistrust or fear of dealing with authorities or laws that prevent access to rights may act as obstacles in accessing your rights as a victim of crime.
Majakka- project aims to implement and imbed flexible operational models that will help organizations to share professional skills, so that the needs of clients are met and specific expertise is readily accessible to all partnership organization.
